Benefits and Applications


  • CD-R manufacture uses Di-n-butyl Ether as the principle solvent for the application of the coating.


  • Di-n-Butyl Ether is a powerful and cost effective solvent for Grignard reactions, particularly those with β-hydrogens increasing the yield of addition products.
  • It is used in the manufacturing process of a range of pharmaceutical API’s such Procarbazine and Cefaclor. It is also used in the manufacture of agrochemicals such as Cyhexatin.
  • It is used widely in Alkyl Lithium, Wittig and other organo-metallic reactions


  • Di-n-butyl ether is an excellent choice of solvent both commercially and technically for a wide range of synthetic reactions and processes where its low water and peroxide content and high boiling point allows for higher process temperatures. Its flash point is higher than other conventional solvents adding to its safety aspects, and it is a much easier solvent to recover after use than THF making the process more economic.
  • It is a good solvent for oils and fats and some natural and synthetic resins.
  • Its properties make it robust for use with either organic acids or alkalis

Properties and Benefits over Tetrahydrofuran (THF)1. Miscibility with water:

  • Unlike THF, DnBE is not miscible with water. Meaning, DnBE can be seperated easily, leading to lower costs in disposing waste/effluent.
  • As DnBE is immiscible with water, it can be distilled out and can be reused.
  • Efficacy should remain the same, for the quantity of DnBE that is recovered.
  • As DnBE can be recovered, significant cost saving v/s THF (THF has to be purchased month over month).

2. Lower peroxide formation:

  • Lower peroxide formation v/s THF.
  • Hence, easier to handle.

3. Higher Boiling Point:

  • Boiling Point of DnBE is b/w 140°C - 143°C, while that of THF is 65°C.
  • Meaning, DnBE has the capability to participate in reactions at higher temperatures than THF.

4. Higher Flash Point:

  • Flash Point of DnBE is 25°C, while that of THF is -14°C.
  • Meaning, DnBE is safer to use and handle than THF.
